The Clinton County Arts Council is happy to announce that a local student Jazz ensemble will open this year’s Saturday lineup of performances! Always in support of education in the arts, we hope you join us in our efforts to promote and encourage young artists in all disciplines.

The Central Mountain Jazz Cats ensemble includes students in grades 7 through 12 who want to explore music through jazz performance.  All band and orchestral instrumentalists are welcome to join the group, which meets a few days a week, after school, from October to May. Students learn to play in various jazz styles, including swing, latin, rock, funk, and blues.  The art of improvisation is emphasized, and students are afforded multiple opportunities throughout the school year to show off their musical creativity and skills.  Annual performances typically include a Winter concert and a Spring concert at Central mountain High School, a December performance at the Monument Tree Lighting Festival, and an adjudicated performance at Music in the Parks int he Hershey area.  Additionally, the CM Jazz Cats ensemble usually schedules a mini-tour of performances in our community.

THE SORTERS

Saturday, August 10, 2024

2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Main & Grove Street Stage

Nominated as "best folk band" for the 2023 CPMA awards, The Sorters" emerged organically from the daily grind of Spencer, Callie, and Kyle at a farm store, where their shared passion for music led to post-work jam sessions in a cabin they constructed. Drawing inspiration from their morning task of sorting produce, the band aptly named themselves "The Sorters." With James joining as a drummer and Sam contributing mandolin and harmonica skills, the lineup solidified, enhanced later by Danny's lead guitar prowess.

Their synergy created a unique sound, complementing Spencer's vocals, Callie's cello and keys, and Kyle's low end. Rooted in real-life experiences, each song crafted by The Sorters tells its own story. The band gained traction in Pennsylvania, captivating audiences at notable festivals like Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, Another World Festival, Corning Glass Fest, and Sterling Folk Fest.

The Sorters have been dedicating their time in the studio to recording singles and EPs, showcasing their musical depth. Taking creative control, they ventured into music video production, crafting compelling visuals for tracks like "Window" and "Sad Long Story." The band's live performance on PBS WPSU, available on YouTube, further amplified their reach.

Recognized for their talent, The Sorters received multiple CPMA nominations for best folk band. Callie Shumway, contributing her exceptional cello skills, earned the prestigious title of best auxiliary musician at the Steamtown Music Awards. As they continue to captivate audiences and carve their niche in the folk rock music scene, The Sorters exemplify dedication, creativity, and a commitment to telling stories through their music.

The B-Side Guys on Tennessee:

“The raw, soulful twang of Bonnie and the Mere Mortals’ “Tennessee” taps into a rich vein of alt-country, echoing the likes of Neko Case and Margo Price, but with a strikingly intimate and humanizing edge. . . It’s the anthem for those who long to be seen and heard, and a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the destination is not as important as the journey itself.”

THe Pittsburgh 100 “Led by Avella native Bonnie Ramone, an infusion of Appalachian roots and the soul of the South help deliver visceral punches ranging from acoustic ballads to anthems backed by thumping bass and electric guitars.”

James Supra’s blues harmonica prowess is legendary in the world of blues. For more than 30 years he has been playing the blues with variations of his own bands and sharing the stage in the U.S. and abroad with blues notables as diverse as B.B. King, Catfish Hodge, Bobby Radcliff, Tommy Castro, Rhett Tyler, Slam Allen and Kid Bangem. He has won Best Harmonica Player honors in a 19-year LVMA (Lehigh Valley Music Awards) streak before refusing further nominations and earning the first LVMA Legacy Award. James’ other LVMA multiple-year (Fan and Industry) awards have also included Best All-Around Performer and Best Blues Band.

Classically trained Sarah Ayers began singing the blues while in college even before she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Opera Performance. Proving her chops early, Ayers has the honor of being one of the youngest ever to win an award at a Metropolitan Opera competition. She later sang with the Anchorage Opera Company in Alaska. While there she continued to expand her extraordinary vocal talent to the blues, jazz, and rock and roll.

After returning to the Lehigh Valley and filling in for Bev Conklin of BC and Company at a Musikfest performance, Ayers formed her own blues band in 2002. Since than, Ayers has continued to pile up accolades and awards for her vocal virtuosity that has included multi-year LVMA (Fan and Industry) awards for Best All-Around Performer, Best Female Vocalist, Best Singer-Songwriter, and Best Album “3 AM Epipheny” (2007). Ayers has also recorded backup vocals for an early Tyrone Vaughn (nephew of Stevie Ray) CD.
